Central streets of Azerbaijan's capital Baku were covered in carpets on Sunday (May 5) to celebrate the National Carpet Weaver day. Carpets could be seen on ground, walls and even covering some of the historical sights. Each carpet sports a unique design with patters and colour palette differentiating from region to region and from community to community. Carpets are commonly used in the region to decorate floor, walls and sometimes ceilings. Made from wool or silk, carpets, apart from being a work of art, also provide a decent amount of heat and sound isolation. The art of carpet weaving flourished in Azerbaijan in Middle Ages and was influenced by the other schools of carpet weaving, such as Persia and Turkey. The secrets and tricks used in the production have been onpassed from generation to generation. In 2010, UNESCO added the art of Azerbaijani carpet weaving to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. -Report from Reuters For more News Digital News Raw Cuts, click the lin
